Routeslips is devoted to one task – giving cyclists the tools to create, distribute and print accurate routeslips.
And it does it for free.
For years I have struggled to find routeslips for rides that sound interesting.
I knew that the internet could provide a central location for cyclists to share routeslips. The idea of Routeslips was born.
The domain was purchased in exchange for a California Triple Crown jersey and coding began!
Having a central repository of routeslips was a good start. However, I still had two problems with these routeslips:
I had typically used MapQuest to step through each step of a routeslip prior to embarking on the ride. This was tedious and could not accurately confirm distances.
Then the solution to the technical problems arrived in the form of Google Maps.
Now I could create a tool that did not require any third party software to be installed. Route distances and turn directions are calculated automatically as the route is entered. Errors arising from the measurement (and transcription) of distances and directions were eliminated.
The PDF is automatically generated from the route eliminating another source of errors. This gives the user the freedom to create their own routeslip PDF format; varying column fonts, widths and titles. Five columns are available to be displayed on routeslips – label, direction, cumulative distance, distance to next marker and distance to previous marker.
Finally, the magic of Google Maps allows the user to step through any routeslip zooming and panning as necessary to familiarize themselves with any turn. Photos can be linked to any marker so actual photos of rest stops, mountain passes, trail heads, finish lines, etc can be displayed with the route.
In-built features of Google Maps such as satellite views are also available for locating hard-to-find bike paths and trails.
I hope you enjoy and use this tool created by cyclists for cyclists. I welcome your feedback - .
After relocating to Southern California from Australia 7 years ago I was seduced by the fast food lifestyle and my weight shot up 20lbs in my first three three months.
In an attempt to reign this in I discovered mountain biking then rediscovered road riding and now alternate between both.
When not dodging cars or cactii on my bikes I am a Software Engineer, Civil Engineer, Project Manager and Company Director.
